A Good Yarn ~ Teaching the Love of Knitting since 1999
In 1999, Lorraine Gaudet opened A Good Yarn on a tree-shaded street in historic Fells Point. The row house, classroom, and workshop has grown to become Baltimore's premiere teaching shop and meeting place for knitters—beginners and beyond—throughout the area.
As you may know by now, A GOOD YARN has transitioned from a retail yarn shop to a teaching studio offering a hands on approach to learning the craft of traditional knitting (American and Continental), as well as, technique and design.
Those of you who know me understand this move. Teaching my craft, and sharing my knowledge has been my love and goal since I opened the shop 16 years ago. Many of you have come thru the doors of our little shop looking for some wonderful local, natural yarn and left with much more; a warm hug, a new friend, a little networking, a problem solved, a safe space to be; all this while learning a new technique. Around this table the love of a craft is always shared and I am pleased that, although I no longer sell yarn, the tradition of teaching my craft remains strong. I consider all of you family, near and far, and hold you close as I start the new chapter of A GOOD YARN STUDIO.
We are now offering:
ORGANIZED GROUP CLASSES
Scheduled and available on the weekends, these classes consist of no more than 6 students, working on the same project. Please check our class schedule for descriptions, costs, dates, and times.
I can also tailor a group class schedule based on your individual group’s needs. This type of class would be good if you and your knitting buddies wanted to make the same sweater, socks, mittens, etc., as a knit along and just needed help getting started or with the whole finishing process. Please call, 410-327-3884, or email me, LorraineatAGY@gmail.com, and we can assess what your needs are. Groups are limited to 6 participants.
These sessions are set up to work with your schedule and by appointment only. Please call, 410-327-3884, or email me, LorraineatAGY@gmail.com for an appointment.
Cost: $10.00 per hour
Days: Tuesday - Friday
Times: 11AM – 6PM, BY APPOINTMENT ONLY
Suggestions for this class include:
Learn how to create your own pattern based on a favorite sweater.
Sizing and gauging a pattern to fit your needs.
Any technique you would like to learn.
Individual attention to a project you are having trouble with.
Finishing up works in progress.
Help with any knitting question you may have, no question too big or too small.
In order to keep the price per hour reasonable for the individual classes, I may double book that time for not more than 2 people. (I will only book beginners with beginners.)
Starting in July 2014, there will be NO MORE DROP IN HELP SESSIONS ON FRIDAYS. I am sorry to see this go.
If you are visiting Baltimore for work or pleasure why not take advantage of our visitors program and learn a new technique. Consider this a souvenir that will remind you of our lovely city, last a lifetime, and give you something to share with your fiber friends back home.
To see what techniques we teach, please look under classes and techniques for a listing of what we have available.
Cost is $20.00 per technique for a 2 hour class. ($10.00 each additional hour.)
Dates and times, will of course, depend on your scheduled visit to the city. Please email me at LorraineatAGY@gmail.com to set up a date and time.
BEGINNER KNITTING CLASSES (American or Continental)
Always my favorite, this class consists of 4, two hour, sessions, preferably one week apart (we can work within your time constraints). You will learn the basics of casting on, knitting, purling, identifying the difference between the two, fixing mistakes, knitting in the round, increases, decreases, YO, and binding off. When you are done with this class, you will have completed a hat and started a scarf. You can continue on with other classes in the shop and you will have the ability to understand what the group classes are teaching. The class cost of $100.00 includes 4, two hour, sessions and all your materials
BEGINNING CROCHET CLASSES
This class consists of 4, two hour, sessions. You will learn how to do a slip knot, chain, double crochet and triple crochet, some combined stitches; and increasing and decreasing, You will also learn how to work in the round to create a hat from the top down. Working back and forth you will create a scarf and learn how to read edges. The cost is $100.00 and includes the 4, two hour, sessions and all your materials.
Please note that these 2 beginning classes can be done on an individual basis or with a group (no more than 6) of friends. Price is set per person (no group discounts available).
Are you a person who loves the knitting of a project but not so much all the weaving in, seaming, button attachment, etc. Bring it to me and I will be glad to do that for you. The finishing process completes the look of any project. Between the two of us, you will have a completed garment to be proud of. Cost is determined on a per project basis.
Every Saturday from 10 AM – 12 Noon, we get together and just knit, and talk, and knit, and solve the worlds problems, and knit and discuss whatever...
The best part is that we are all drinking coffee, running our mouths, eating pastries and in general schmoozing, all the while working on simple projects that allow us to do all that at the same time. No stress, just fun. Whether you knit, crochet, or do other handwork that suits your fancy, you are welcome. Trust me, whether you come from around the block or from around the world, this core group of knitters will welcome you with open arms and want to know who you are and what you are working on. And soon, you will not be the new kid. If you are only here for a little while, we will miss you when you are gone, and wish you safe journeys wherever they lead. I think that the Saturday morning group is the most wonderful, funny, warm, and friendly group of people I know. This group is the "charm" in “Charm City”, and I am lucky to call them my friends, and students.
Every year we start knitting for charity in July. For Christmas 2014, our charity knit donations (hats scarves and mittens) will go to a local women’s shelter. We will be meeting on the last Monday of each month starting, Monday, July 28th, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Panera. (Located on Boston Street across from Canton Crossing.) Basic hat, scarf and mitten patterns are available free at the shop web site: www.agoodyarn.com/freepatterns.html. All sizes for both children and adults will be greatly appreciated.
